IABTC Instructing Pet Dog Owners (Practical Competence)

    Next course date - April 26-29, 2010
                                    October 4-7, 2010

A 4 day course introducing and developing instructing skills.

The IABTC takes around 6-10 students on each course enabling us to personalise each course with the level pitched to suit the ability and experience of the students on the course.

Students will study the dog's mind, motivation, reward systems, teaching skills, breed differences, behaviour problems, PR, as well as the more logistical and legal aspects of teaching dog training. Although the course will be underpinned by the theory of the subject, the emphasis will be on the more practical elements of teaching others.  It will also give the students the opportunity to learn new techniques, brush up on those they already know and develop others.  The course is suitable for those who have dog training skills and wish to progress to teaching others, as well as for those who have already started instructing but would like to further develop their ability and skills.

You may bring your own dog along on this course (although this is not compulsory).  There will also be opportunities to handle other dogs (some trained - some untrained) as well as trying your instructing skills (with the support of your course tutor where necessary) on especially invited clients – although this is a teaching environment you will have the opportunity of working with ‘real’ clients as part of the course.

Some students will wish to attend to gain more knowledge, others will hope to gain an IABTC qualification, and therefore assessment is available but not compulsory.  For students who wish to be assessed this will be an on going throughout the week with a general assessment on the final day.  Certificates will be graded depending on level of ability at that time.

There are a number of levels that students can achieve with the IABTC:
    1.     IABTC Pet Dog Training (Assistant Instructor)
    2.                   IABTC Pet Dog Training (Instructor)
    3.     IABTC Pet Dog Training (Advanced Instructor)
    4.            IABTC Dog Training (Specialist Instructor)

The 3rd and 4th levels also require study and assessment at a theoretical level – this can be achieved in one of two ways; on a distance learning basis which can be done in your own time and is assessed by the production of assignments. Or for those who feel they already have the knowledge a formal written test at the IABTC centre can be arranged.

This course will provide evidence towards the Kennel Club Accreditation Scheme for
Instructors in Dog Training and Canine Behaviour (KCAI).
Those working towards this can gain assistance from course leader and KCAI mentor/assessor Angela White KCAI CD Adv, Ob Adv.

The cost of this 4 day course is £293.76 (£250.00 plus VAT) for the 4 days.
This price includes tuition, lecture notes, full support and practical assessment for those requiring it.
These courses will have restricted numbers to ensure you of our best attention.

a dog that you can use we will also use some of the dogs resident at the centre so it will not be a problem.

    IABTC Canine Behaviour and Modification
Problem Analysis, Prevention and Modification Programmes

This Course is ideal for Dog Training Instructors and behavioural trainers
who want to know more about preventing, identifying and dealing with canine behaviour problems

The Course is divided into 5 sections – each with a duration of 4 days and each course can be studied on its own if you already have an in depth knowledge of the previous units. These units will be held each year so if you can’t manage them all in one year you can come back and study later. Ideally all units should be studied in order. Units 1-3 follow a natural progression – for experienced instructors unit 4 can be taken at any time, but unit 5 should always be the final unit as without the knowledge of units 1-4 unit 5 will not be possible.

    Unit 1        How Dogs Learn                   May 17 – 20, 2010
Canine behavioural development stages, blocks and catalysts to learning, reward and motivation,
nature versus nurture, instinctive and innate behaviours, introducing the great dominance and hierarchy debate.

    Unit 2        Evolution and Breeds          July 5 – 8, 2010
Evolution - the wolf and its role in domestic dogs, understanding breeds,
breed specific behaviours and needs, emotionality in dogs.

    Unit 3        Brain and Behaviour           September 27 – 30, 2010
Brain and behaviour, aggression, separation, anxiety and stress, psychopharmacology,
complementary therapies, professionalism, counselling and advising.

    Unit 4        Instructing Pet Owners        April 27 – 30 and October 5 – 8, 2010
Practical Skills - There are currently 2 dates available for this unit which also stands alone as a practical course
for instructors of dog training. Exploring the knowledge, skills and equipment needed to
teach others the basic control of dogs – a must for anyone dealing with behaviour problems.

    Unit 5        Behaviour Modification      November 8 – 11, 2010
Case studies – learning how to analyse specific behaviour problems and produce modification programmes
n the real world. For this unit you will be able to bring your own case studies, work though past case studies
of the tutors and the centre as well as working with real clients under the supervision of the course leaders.

    IABTC Canine Behaviour and Modification

A series of 5 courses each with a duration of 4 days introducing and developing skills and diagnostic ability. Students will be offered an in depth study the dog's mind, motivation, reward systems, one to one teaching skills, breed differences, behaviour problems, as well as the more logistical and legal aspects of helping dog owners overcome behaviour problems with their dog. The course will be underpinned by the theory of the subject, but where possible there will also be an emphasis on the more practical elements.

Unit 4 will give the students the opportunity to learn new practical handling techniques, brush up on those they already know and develop others.  The course is suitable for those who have dog training skills and wish to progress to teaching others. It stands alone as a course for instructors but for those wishing to deal with behavioural problems it lays the foundation for teaching the essential basic control skills that are often missing and a contributory factor to behaviour problems.

There will also be opportunities to handle other dogs (some trained - some untrained) as well as trying your skills (with the support of your course tutor where necessary) on especially invited clients – although this is a teaching environment you will have the opportunity of working with ‘real’ clients as part of the course.

It is not necessary to bring your own dog along on this course and there will be limited opportunities to work with your own dog.  However should you need to bring a dog with you will need to be able to leave it in your vehicle safely, there will be adequate breaks and there is ample exercise area – please ensure your vehicle is adequately ventilated.

Some students may wish to attend to gain more knowledge, others may hope to gain an IABTC qualification, and therefore assessment is available but not compulsory.  For students who wish to be assessed this will on going throughout the week, you will need to allocate a couple of hours in the evenings to digest what has been learnt during the day and some evenings you will need to complete a simple worksheet. There will be a final assignment that you will need to complete at home and send back.  Certificates will be graded depending on level of ability at that time. All candidates will be given a certificate of attendance at the end of each 4 day course.

KCAI - For those interested in becoming accredited instructors with the Kennel Club, the IABTC is a recognised training provider for the scheme. The course leader Angela White is KCAI accredited (CD Adv and Ob Adv), an assessor for the scheme, on the KCAI assessors and verifiers working party, the KCAI module development working party and a member of the KCAI board. Each of the units of this course will help provide valuable evidence of ability and competence for those working towards accreditation or wishing to brush up on skills and knowledge.

The cost of each unit (each 4 day course) is £293.75 (£250.00 plus 17.5%VAT).

This price includes tuition, lecture notes, full support and assessment for those requiring it.  These courses will have restricted numbers to ensure you of our best attention.
